return to monte ne

A few weekends back, we returned to Monte Ne to take pictures of the amphitheater that we missed on our first trip.

Hiccup and I got up early that day, wanting to beat the rain that was supposed to hit northwest Arkansas later that afternoon. We went by Underdog's and grabbed him first, then went and grabbed David Keetz and Anne. Then, we were off to Rogers, Arkansas for the second time.

When we arrived at Monte Ne, we drove around the cove to where the amphitheater was. We weren't really sure how we missed it last time, since it was plainly visible across the water from the tower, but we had. There were probably a dozen cars parked on the exposed lakeshore, and people were everywhere. Just like us, they were here to see the amphitheater, which hadn't been this visible in nearly thirty years. The abnormally low lake level was to thank for that.

We walked down the shore and joined the crowd by the water's edge. It was even more amazing than the pictures had showed it to be. A Roman amphitheater halfway peeking out of Beaver Lake just wasn't something you saw every day. It was so out of place and completely strange.

The amphitheater stretched probably twenty or thirty yards down the shore in a slight bowl shape. There were a few stone seats completely exposed, as well as a set of stairs leading down into the water. There were also the remains of what appeared to be a road, also heading down into the water. It wasn't visible, but from the pictures I'd seen, there were still at least a couple underground chambers underneath the water. If the water had only been a few feet lower, we could've seen those, too.

We spent a little while hanging out and taking pictures. People were coming and going constantly, doing the same thing as us. During that time, I also caught a huge blue crawfish that Underdog had spotted sitting on part of the amphitheater underwater. It was the biggest one I'd ever caught and probably the third one I'd caught for my friends while exploring. Actually, it seemed like I was always stumbling across or catching some weird critter on our adventures.

Eventually, we got back in the car and drove over the tower, where there were tons of people like last time. Hiccup and Underdog hadn't been present before, so we wanted them to get to climb the tower, too. We thought it was probably a good idea to check out the servants' quarters under Oklahoma Row again first, since we took so long climbing the tower last time. So, we spent a little while poking around down there.

When we were ready, I went and got the ladder, chucked it up to the second floor of the tower, and crawled up behind it. Then I tossed it up to the third floor and climbed up to that one, too. Once again, we had a pretty good crowd of people watching us curiously. It was a huge rush, and I loved it.

This time, I had a better plan about where to attach the cable ladder. I hung it around the column between the windows on the third floor. From there, it could hang all the way to the ground, so that the guys could climb it to the door on the second floor. Once everyone was on the second floor, I pulled the ladder from outside the window and dropped it through the hole in the second floor, still attached to the column. Then, everyone climbed from there up to the third floor.

At that point, I had to climb back down and run to my car for my grappling hook and rope. Without it, there just wasn't any way to get the ladder to the roof, because I couldn't climb up there while carrying it and it was too high to toss it. So, I headed back down, took some pictures of the guys sitting in the third floor windows while I was there, and retrieved the rope and grappling hook from my trunk.

When I was back up to third floor, I tossed the grappling hook up through the hole in the ceiling. Then, I climbed the handholds cut into the wall until I could sit inside a square hole there. From there, I grabbed the lip of the roof and pulled myself up. The others attached the ladder to the rope like last time, and I hauled it up and attached it to the chimney. With that, everyone climbed up to the roof to enjoy the view.

We spent a good long while on the roof. I could've spent hours up there, just getting a kick out of the curious reactions of the people below. I also liked the way people would start cracking up when they saw our ladder hanging in the building. They thought we were crazy, and I was absolutely loving every second of it.

After a while, a husband and wife with a couple teenagers came along, and the father started encouraging his kids to climb up and join us. If the kids had been alone, I totally wouldn't have gone for them joining us. But I figured if their father was okay with it, why not? The older teenager was able to make it to the third floor on his own, but the younger only made it to the second. So, I climbed down, reached down and grabbed him by the arm and hauled him up. From there, they climbed the ladder and joined us on the roof.

When we felt like we'd spent enough time, we started heading back down. The two teenagers climbed down on their own, but the rest of us used the ladder to climb down, although each time I would have to stay above and detach the ladder and climb down by hand. We had a better idea of what we were doing this time, and it was a heck of a lot faster getting down than it had been before.

Back on the ground, we packed up and headed back to the car. Everyone was tired, so we just made a quick drive by the foundations that were down the shore from the tower. There wasn't that much to see there, anyway. Then we drove on to Eureka Springs, got some dinner, and headed back to Springfield.

Glad you enjoyed Monte Ne. I live in Rogers and it has always been an interesting place. There is a lot more history to Monte Ne then what is seen there. I did get to see it back in the 70's when the lake was a lot lower than it is currently. But thanks to my dad, I didn't get to see everything. He was just interested in the theater. Just recently, I've been able to explore it more. Behind the hotel, there is a bridge that is still under water. Hopefully the water will still go down so that it will soon be exposed. I imagine it will take until late January or February for the water to get lower. If you have any questions, let me know, I'll try to answer them. Looks like you and your friends have fun in your explorations. Wished I had come up with the things you do when I was your age! At least I have 2 teenagers to keep me young... At heart at least!

Glad you published the great amphitheater photos. I see that the water level is now at the level it was in 1977 when I took some of the photos on my Monte Ne pages. I hope to be there at Christmas to get more photos of my own.

Yeah, that was an amazing trip and I don't think I'll ever see anything like that again. I'm so glad I went. I almost didn't because I was throwing up that morning due to bad Taco Bell. Once we got there I would have given my left arm for a scuba suite. That trip was one of my favorite adventures ever with UO. I also decided after this WR can climb anything.

Four of us went to Monte Ne today (January 7, 2006) to explore and take pictures. Even more of the amphitheater is visible now. With no rain predicted for the next several weeks, I can't wait to go back and see how much more is exposed.
I also found a great web site that has photos of the amphitheater and Monte Ne resort before Beaver Lake, during the 1977 record-low lake levels, and currently. The address is: http://jamesmskipper.tripod.com/jamesmskipper/MonteNe1.html

What I don't understand is why someone would destroy something as wonderful as this Hotel. I may not be an expert about it but i am doing reserch to learn about it and it seems to have been a wonderful place. Why wold someone destroy it. I get even madder when i go to see it and everyone is destroying it by spraypainting all over it. Its just Pathetic. I mean its pretty sad when a 17 year old junior is getting mad about the stupidity of people today. They should be respecting the ruins, not destroying them.

when my sister and i first moved to rogers, arkansas we where told that monte ne was haunted. so us and some of our friends went and stayed out there holloween night. after that my sister and i did a lot of research and found what it really was. it stroke out intrest and we couldnt stay away. i think it would be amazing if they drained bever lake so we could see the whole thing and make it into something beautiful again, or if we could go scuba diving to venture out more and get even more of what it is.

When I was 12 years old, I went to Camp Joyzelle which was located on the sides of some hills right by the Amphitheater. I spent many late afternoons at the spring that bubbled up at the amphitheater trying to cool off a bit and resting and dreaming. One of my favorite memories is lying on my stomach to drink from the spring and noticing that three or four feet a way a black snake was also drinking from the spring. I was so pleased to share the experience with the snake. I felt connected to the creature, not afraid. I was grateful somehow--or flattered -- I can't really find the right words.
Anyway, thanks for this site and the opportunity to share one of the best thins that has ever happened to me in my 70 years on this good earth.

I have a personal friend who vehemently claims he has fought a demon there, said the water around turned a blood red color and looked as if it was boiling. He has a huge scar on his arm and states it is from the fight, he claims this was a portal to hell. My Pastor has also heard the rumors about it being haunted, and stated there used to be a satan worshipers service there on every Tuesday night, and that many local church groups have gone and prayed over it...I also heard there is an apparation of a mean looking dog that chases you. I am a skeptic, so am not sure. I just know when I go to visit the tower, I get the creeps. I also have a friend that has a picture she took of the front of the tower, and states there are other things in the photo lost in the graffiti, that was not in the real life view, some kind of words, she showed me, I cannot remember what it was now.
Does anyone know anything about this rumor of it being haunted, or a portal to hell, or the satanic worship services? If so, I am interested. We live only 6 miles from the place and used to visit the area often. Anything anyone knows would be appreciated. Thank you....Mary in Rogers

I was a camper at Camp Joyzelle in the 50's. Contrary to what some think, the amphitheatre was never completed. It was my understanding that the Depression was why construction ceased.
It was much as you see it in the pictures except the water was lower. We used to canoe in the adjacent waters. We ran all over the amphitheatre.

We also heard ghost stories but I am sure they were made up by the older campers to scare us younger girls.

I have such happy memories of Monte Ne and Camp Joyzelle.

Well, I just got back from the old hotel, and knew not of the stories of it being haunted till we left that night. My boyfriend and I went there to see the place, as I'm a big fan of old buildings. Everything seemed fine till we first walked through the doorway. I felt a very uneasy feeling right away, and had to exit. After we got out I prayed, then went back in. My boyfriend felt uneasy as well, and we both felt unwelcome. We decided to go back to the car and get a camera to take pictures, as it was night we couldn't really see all that well. With every flash I was amazed at the sight of the old building, and very curious to what had taken place there. I turned to my boyfriend and claimed that this seemed like a place that had had seances preformed in it. Only after research afterwards did I find I might have been right (story of "Mary", and others we found). We got a feeling that left an impression of a lady that seemed as a teacher, dressed in brown with glasses, and black eyes, dark hair and with it up in a bun. I also saw am image of a little girl in a red shirt with a white skirt with the flash of one photo in the small room to the right. One of our pictures has an image of a face it's made out of a whitish grey fog, and we have no explination for it. If anyone has any info on the history of this place, please post it, and I plan to go back during the day so that I might beable to enjoy the place without all the weird feelings of unwantedness. For anyone going to this place at night becareful as there are many holes. Thanks!
