cave + silos + alarms

Youthsonic and I had a day full of alarms and security guards. We got into both places that we wanted, but each time we had to cut it short.

First, we got into the 170 acre underground cold storage facility in Kansas City, Kansas. This former mine was the site of the famous fire that burned for two months in the 1990’s. Our goal was to find the remains of the food storage area, where the fire was. Once inside, we walked back about ½ mile. Although we were in total darkness, navigation was no problem, as we never left the main road. But we were always on the outside of the food storage area. After setting off two motion detectors and one audible alarm, we decided that we had enough. We walked back to the entrance thinking that we were going to have to plead for mercy. But fortunately, there was no one waiting for us. If we go back, we think that we can avoid the alarms.

There is an unusual round chamber in this cave, about 50 feet in diameter and 30 feet high. That was the best part.

Our next stop was an idea that Youthsonic had: the huge silo complex in North Kansas City. This site should be the Mount Olympus of climbing: there are exterior stairs, ladders and catwalks everywhere, going up to a height of about 12 stories. Getting inside was no problem. But climbing is tricky, because the bottom 8 feet of all of the stairs and ladders have been cut off. We got only a little ways off the ground when a security truck entered the property. We left then, without having accomplished very much.
