Armour Meat getting demolished?
I just read where somewhere on UER said Armour Meat is getting demolished.
Is this true?

Re: Armour Meat getting demolished?
I was there two weekends ago.
There's been a lot of scrapping going on there, and they've started palletizing bricks again.
Two large transformers were ripped off the wall in the equipment room, their windings removed and their laminations lumped in a big pile, all soaking in transformer oil.
The fallen steelwork in the boiler room has been cut off and hauled away, random pipes lay on the ground, freshly cut into managable sections.
An electrical cabinet in the boiler room has been completely removed and another peice of equipment has been cut open.
The copper is gone from the sky lights.
A generator or two in the equipment room has been torn apart, leaving it's armature laying on the floor stripped of all it's copper.
The steam driven compressor appears to still be intact for now.
Sadly, I think we're seeing the beginning of the end for Armour.
Maybe the brick-and-concrete shells will remain after the scapping is through.

Yeah, I was there last week and there is definitely some action over there.
It's a shame. It's the first time I've been over there and it's probably the coolest place I've been so far.

Does anyone know where this information came from? I know I was there a few weeks aqo, and I was surprised that many of the entrances had been sealed up. Luckily, they didn't seal the huge hole in the wall. It used to be side open, and it is clear that someone is paying more attention to it. I just don't know where this information that it is being demolished came from.

alright I went out with some people tonight and it looked pretty much exactly like it did when I was there in February, no real signs of activity.

As odd as it may sound it could just be some people looking for scrap metals. Copper is at a premium and it sounds like that's what may have happened... we have copper missing in Springfield at times. Back during the ice storm a public notice went out to stop taking the spools of electrical line that the utility companies were putting up. The notice furthur went on to say that it was not copper in the lines but alumnium... which isn't worth as much as copper. Though I don't know how that would stop anyone from stealing it.

Until I see an actual source citing plans for demolition, I'm going to try and remain positive.

Yeah, there could be a number of reasons for them scrapping certain parts. Hopefully their intentions aren't demolition...
We had been planning a road trip to St. Louis to go and visit that place, along with a few others.

I'm really hoping to get a chance to check this out Sunday. Fingers crossed - wish me luck that I can work in a sidetrip out there!

We were there the other day and it is pretty darn cool. We found some old news papers from October of 1980. We were there for a couple hours and walked around the entire outside and by the stock yards.

If all goes well, I'll be there tomorrow - the people I'm going to see are up for it, happily.
I'll post pics if I get any good ones, although I'll probably do it in the Photo-a-day thread in the Other forum as everyone in this section's probably seen the place five thousand times.

How safe is it down there? I'd go there but since it is in Illinois, I'm worried about getting raped by hobos or gangstas.

I was just there today with two other people and there was no one around at all anywhere nearby.
It was awesome, you should go!
