I'd like to add that there is a cave I have yet to explore in a close vicinity to the old smelter

Update: that cave sucks. We (Panic! et al) crawled for a bit in the mud and standing water before deciding to head to more fun caves. Doesn't seem to open up more than 2 feet of headroom.
