Scotia Ironworks furnace stack

Post by PANIC! on the Titanic »

So I checked out this iron smelter stack the other day. Active 1870-1880, I'm surprised it's still standing, just out there in the middle of the woods unmaintained. It's on MDC property (Huzzah Conservation Area), so no trespassing needed. I mean, there ARE signs that say "Hazardous area no unauthorized entry" but after authorizing myself, I saw no hazards other than one side of the stack collapsing catastrophically.

Also I found a cool giant walking stick, male.

"In 1880 the Scotia Iron Works machinery was moved to Dent
County because of depleted ore supplies and because of dis
agreement among the owners. The machinery was used to build
a similar -hot blast furnace appropriately called the Nova
Scotia Furnace. This snielter was located in an area thickly
strewn with boulders of specular hematite. (Grawe, Pyrites
Deposites of Missouri, p. 305.) In 1888 the furnace equipraent
was moved to Paducah, Kentucky."

How interesting. Wonder what happened to it after that.

Don't think I've ever seen someone climb a furnace before! Neat area out there.

As, I'm not a woodsman. How can you tell the sex of a walking stick?
More online investigation than onsite exploration these days.

The males are usually much smaller than the females (typical sexual dimorphic traits of insects) and it has those claspers on it's ass end for clamping the female during particularly lengthy coitus (like, up to 50+ days).

This place looks awesome. I have found the rough area where the stack is located but I can't seem to pinpoint exactly where it is. Can you help with the exact location? Feel free to PM if you don't want to post coordinates.

Browser I had a crop of crown tipped coral on my property recently. Was our first time finding them. They were good. Also found a our first chicken of the woods during a weekend on the Buffalo River.

My year has been a little weak. A few puffballs. Found a couple of oysters but they were a little old. No chanterelles. I may get a chance to look around this weekend.

No chanterelles at my place either. We had them last year. What do the puffballs taste like? We do have those.

Not much in the way of flavor, but a good texture. Slice about half inch thick, milk, flour/salt/pepper, deep fry. I've seen other recipes, but there really isn't much flavor there.

I don't mind posting this here since it's on public land, not hard to find once you get here, especially now that the leaves are off the trees.

The mine is just north of the ironworks. The creek that runs alongside it is full of slag, and in some places runs through slag piles. Also, the Ozark Trail runs next to the stacks and the mine pit.
