This past week I was in Shannon Co. doing some forest inventory. It just so happened that the property included Allen Branch Cave, so I stopped by to check out the entrance area.
The entrance is actually a "double entrance", as the first entrance is a natural tunnel. Following the spring up through the back of the tunnel leads to a huge breakdown area, with the spring issuing out of the cave proper and down over large dolomite slabs.
The breakdown makes the multi-layeredness of the cave plainly visible; the spring at the floor of the main entrance down to the spring at the natural tunnel is a good 50 of elevation.
The absolute scale of these entrances, the volume of water issuing from the cave, and the sheer number cave origin/formation features makes this whole area the most attractive cave I've seen in this state yet. I'll be uploading some of the vids to Youtube but for now here's some pictures.
