Low water on river reveals history
Low water on river reveals history
Since the summer has been abnormally dry and hot, some really neat items have been revealed with the low water levels. My friend snapped this picture of near the Missouri and Gasconade confluence. This may be the locomotive from the 1855 disaster that killed 30 people.

That's damn cool. Was just out there not too long ago and wanted to check out the old boatworks, but their one cop was on duty and there were a bunch of folks just hanging out on porches along the street out to the works.
Gasconade is an "interesting" place these days.

So, I guess this is normally under the tree cover near the river next to the east bank of the bridge on google maps..

Apparently, the steamboat Montana is also visible.

It is a great story. I am going to try to check out the engine this weekend. According to my friend, it is only accessible and viewable by boat. Has anybody tried using a metal detector along riverbanks during low water periods? If so, success? Maybe now would be a good time for me to get one.

Granted, I'm pretty shitty at working a metal detector, but when I've tried this I just found lots of garbage.critter wrote:It is a great story. But is any of it cool trash?
Mandi's found some cool bottles and stuff at some of the beaches around here.
All I find is coal washed downstream from the power plant.

More online investigation than onsite exploration these days.
