The government bought the whole town and turned the utilities off of the people who wouldn't sell out and leave. The town is in the middle of a Superfund site, polluted by lead, zinc and other mineral tailings from strip mining and deep mining all around it. IOW, it is little worse than most of the Four State Area, but the government decided to concentrate on it. Actually, it probably is quite a bit worse, but there are other areas that are pretty bad and a lot of our area is pretty polluted.
