Missouri Morel Season
Re: Missouri Morel Season
I'll do what I can - wish we'd remembered the camera last night. The ones at home are already sliced, but if we head back out there I'll take pictures of the falsies! They were crazy colored. We did knock one of them over to make sure it was false.
If they'd been real, we were gonna have some filet-o-morels for dinner!

RE: Missouri Morel Season
Found 12 today while I was "working." A little dry, but they were mostly big.

Well that rain we had last night and this morning must have helped. I saw a guy sitting on the side of South Campbell Street with a big sign that said Morels for sale. I was working so I did not have time to stop.
I plan on going back out at least once more probably on Saturday. I think we might be able to get at lease 1 more good harvest before the season is over.

I'd end up eating the wrong kind and dying ..or wandering around for hours through the woods in the dark thinking I had night vision while conversing with imaginary (or were they real?) beings.
On second thought, I should go morel hunting...

Lol! I feel ya. The good thing about these though is that they are pretty unique mushrooms. There are no poisonous look-a likes. That's why they are so popular. That and the fact that they are delicious! We call them "brains on a stick" cuz that's kinda what they look like. I just can never find the damn things around here.

Re: Missouri Morel Season
How do you guys cook yours? Last year I found one worthy of a meal by itself, so I fried it in butter, but it mostly just tasted like butter. Suggestions? I'll probably be going out this year since I found the perfect spot for em under a stand of elms. I plan on bringing home a huge sack that rivals my own and cookin em up. Also, do any of you sell them? If so, to whom?

That's exactly what I did last time, a good easy recipe. But I guess I used too much butter? Because I didn't really taste much else.ropingk wrote:we soak them in salt water then bread them with egg and flower adn fry them in butter/oil in a big cast iron skillett skillett

Went out on Saturday to a stretch of woods downtown and found a total of 6 by myself in a few hours time. Today, nothing. Plan to go out to look in the national forests of Christian County sometime later this week.

Just had a nice meal. I found 30, gave six to Mom and Dad and fried up the rest. Brother found 41 today, ten while he was getting his oil changed and went for a walk out in the woods behind the dealership. Lot of people finding them this year.

I found these in the small strip of woods between Mt. Vernon and Grand streets, off Kansas Expressway. This area really is not all that great, although some is better than none.
