I have been a fan since Controversy. When 1999 hit, that was the cassette to have in your cassette case. That and Thriller. He had a substantial impact on the American, and therefore the world, music scene. Tastes have changed and music has evolved, but it has only evolved because people like Prince came along with an entirely new sound and pushed music in different directions and awakened other artists to unconsidered possibilities.

I respect his integrity, he did shit his own way and that gets credit from me. But I've been hearing tons of his stuff lately and it all sounds the same. It's like the soundtrack of any cheesy 80's movie complete with awkward vocals, overbearing synthesizers and electro drum claps. Not only do I find the music very unimpressive, the production is way off as well. The vocals are almost always too quiet compared to some of the other instruments and overall the mix is very flat, muddy and lifeless. He can definitely play guitar though.

I was born in 81 and I recall the 80s music and I hated all of it. Even when I was a kid, I knew that Michael Jackson sucked. Because that is also a fact. Fuck Michael Jackson. Everyone was listening to New Kids on the Block and all that shit. My mom listened to this horrible pop radio station and I couldn't fucking stand that shit. As a result I grew up hating music and fashion.

It wasn't until the 90s that I finally heard music that blew my mind. One song in particular changed my life forever. "Loser" by Beck. It's not that it's even that great of a song, it was just so different than literally everything else I had been subjected to my whole life. The whole "alternative" music scene was so named because it was the alternative to the absolute shit everyone was listening to. Fuck 80s hair metal and pop music and pretty much everything else the 80s gave us, except for a few albums from Metallica and other bands that would usher in the 90s music.

Rant over, I couldn't take any more of everyone's over the top praise of Prince and the pressure was building. I had to let it out. I feel better now.

Not music, but I listened to Steve-o from Jackass on The Point while I was going into work this morning. Apparently he's doing stand-up in town over the next few nights, and hearing him on the radio was unexpectedly funny that early in my day. He talked about all the coke he did with Paris Hilton, and how Lindsey Lohan stole a car and tons of coke from him once.

Yeah I caught the end of the show, he said he's been doing stand up for 6 years now and he's pretty popular, and that some "pure" comedians hate that.
