I had a couple of visits to this estate while Irvin Seltzer owned it , once in the 80's, once in the 90's. Both times I was looking for old woodwork to complete some restoration
I was involved in. I was just a young guy interested inthe old stuff and Irvin was happy to show me what he had.
What he had was several buildings away from the house that were full of old cars and old architectural wood trim and doors. I had a few samples and he would lead me off to look for the right match. I remember thinking that it looked like the back lot at a gangster movie with that era of cars all over the place.
I'm sure we went through the carriage house during our search but it really didn't stand out at the time, everything
being a little run down.
A number of years later, after Irvin's lumber yard on E Division burned down he was in business selling pianos at the corner of National and St Louis (just before Walgreens). I came in holding a very old piece of bead board, needing to match it for the McElhaney House on Walnut. Once again Irvin came through, sketching a little map of his basement and sending me out to the house on Scenic where he had someone working. The map was right on and there I found exactly what I needed amongst the
piles and isles of stuff down there.
I almost forgot to thank Kit for the terrific pics!!

I've always wanted this place. I live not far, the neighborhood isn't great or I'd be more interested, but I love the property.

My brother got married here this weekend so I spent about 2 hours on Friday and 6 hours on Saturday here. The main house is beautiful, though we were not allowed to go inside it. The carriage house has obviously had a lot of work done to it based on what Kit was saying earlier in this thread.

The property/yard .... it had some really neat features and some really pretty places, but to be honest it also had some features and areas that were kind of "trailer park fancy" if you know what I mean. But it did seem like a great place for a wedding. I have no idea how much it cost, but we had the run of the place for 2 solid days. We were allowed access to anything that was available (kitchenware, cleaning supplies, refrigerator, etc.) and we carried in all sorts of stuff during rehearsal that stayed there untouched overnight.

I didn't go up there, but the upstairs portion of the carriage house is a bridal suite. The bride was able to bring everything in there the day before the wedding and leave it all there overnight. I thought I overheard someone saying the bridesmaids spent the night there, but I am not positive of that.

Pictures incoming.

I drive by this place when I go to church. the main house hasn't been painted. I think just the old carrage house was painted, but then again before it was pink it had been painted white for a time. The property has changed hands a couple of times in the past few years but before the constant turnover of owneres it was owned by Erving Steltzer (I probably misspelled his name) for a few decades. As was described to me by a friend of mine who went to tune a piano at that place, the house was over run with cats that urinated everywhere. There was antiques and junk from top to bottom in that place and you could only get from room to room through a tiny walk way.

Ervin Seltzer. He used to own Seltzer's Piano on the corner of St. Louis and National. There's a Walgreen's there now, but years ago it was Aaron's Transmission Shop. When Aaron's went out, Seltzer moved in. Is this what I've heard referred to as "the mansion?" I've never been there, but a friend of mine has. Where, exactly is it? Is it occupied?

It's on Scenic between Mount Vernon and Grand. It's on the West side of the road. And it is occupied.
