UPDATE!

The Paper Co. entrance has been sealed! This is most likely due to construction in the former business' parking lot. It has been blacktopped and chained-off, as has the National Audio Co's lot next door. It may still be possible to reach the Paper Co's basement via the sewers, but I can't be certain at this point.

I've heard there is an underground spring in that basement.

Well I've been down there and I didn't see any spring, but it's possible. I think you're thinking of the "Bottomless Well," which is an interesting historical site you can read about here:

http://www.watershedcommittee.org/publications/springs_of_greene_county/spring_ghosts.htm

I'm still not exactly sure of the site of the well. There's a plaque in Founder's Park that mentions it being nearby, and alludes to a marker, but as of yet I've been unable to locate said marker.

FYI: The Castalian Fountains site is a great resource for anyone interested in the unusual history of Greene Co's water supply.

Sertile was all.."UPDATE!"

“The Springs of Greene County” describes the formation, history, and uses of Greene County’s springs. The publication is the
c o llaboration of three authors: Loring Bullard, Watershed Committee of the Ozarks; Jim Vandike, Missouri Department of Natural
Resources; and Dr. Ken Thomson, Southwest Missouri State University. Mr. Bullard reviews the history of Greene County’s springs,
such as the legendary ‘bottomless well’ at Springfield’s founding site. Mr. Vandike explains the underlying geology that gives rise to
springs and other karst features, such as caves, sinkholes, and losing streams. Dr. Thomson describes the major spring syst e m s
in the county. A limited number of copies of the book are available at the Watershed Committee office at 320 N. Main Avenue,
Springfield, at a cost of $15.00. It is also available online at the DNR website as Water Resources Report No. 68:

Dr. Thomson passed in 2004 from an auto accident.

Speaking of that tunnel flooding, some of us have been planning to ride a canoe (or kayaks) through that tunnel during a rainstorm. I just haven't been able to get a chance to haul my canoe down there when it's rained really heavy. But rest assured, it will happen and pictures will be forthcoming.

Don't forget that I did it with a few friends....and I don't really recommend it. We started at the beginning of the tunnel with barely enough water to float our raft and shot out the other side pushing on the ceiling.....and there's a manhole that they open up before rains located near the ladder at the west entrance that we almost lost someone into.

The hardest part is keeping the boat straight while going past the side tunnels........

on the other hand I'm glad I did it....you couldn't pay me to do it again though.

*edit* i just looked at the date...haha...we definitely went when this was all being talked about.....yah....very dangerous and if anyone tries to do it......you should write a note that says you do not hold any urban exploration group responsible for your stupid idea. Then take that note, put it in a ziplock bag and stuff it inside your shoe for them to find when your body is recovered.

Didn't WR float it on a inflatable lobster? Or am I thinking of someplace else?

There is at least a chapter on springs in Greene County in a local geology book they have on the shelves at Barnes and Noble. Also by Ken Thompson.

The well would have to be across Jordan valley, closer to Chestnut Expwy, then, because that's where Campbell homesteaded. Unless "close" was a much broader term then than I'm giving it credit for now...
