There is this tower in a town called Gas, Kansas. So called due to the amount of natural gas that is underground.
It definitely looks damaged and abandoned. Also thought it was odd that there were air conditioning units outside of it. Makes me think it had some sort of people or staff frequent the place.
The bottom with AC units.
Maybe scout is around. I know he's in the Iola area.

| I've been through Gas several times but never noticed that. Could it be an old microwave tower? The height looks right and it appears to be some sort of official looking industrial tower.

Yeah I'm not sure. usually microwave towers are housed on a metal frame.
I thought it might have something to do with the natural gas industry but I haven't found anything to support that yet. Also I believe there's another one in Chanute, KS. I'll try to snap a pic next time I'm there.
Welcome to the forum by the way!

I may have found something. Thanks for the heads up on the one in Chanute, you had my curiosity going.
If you go way down the page, it lists all of the towers in Chanute. It lists one at 20th and Steuben Ave. which looks identical to the one in Gas, according to the aerial photo.

| I also ran across a site that said oil companies had microwave towers every so often on their pipelines to monitor them. So you may be right about them being used by oil / natural gas companies.

Awesome great find! That gave me enough info to put the correct search terms into google.
You were right. They are microwave towers. Managed by the Long Lines department of AT&T. Some were also used as cold war defense-era communications.
That is if this webpage is talking about the same type of tower. It looks pretty close.

I have always seen that tower when we drive along Hwy. 54...never knew what it was...and I never took the time to drive back there. Very cool!

Guess you need to check a thirty mile radius for the next two in the line.

Good call! The next one south is Chanute. I did a point to point measurement and they are 18 miles away.
And that's funny about them usually being built on hilltops because this is Kansas...no hills.

Finding out these are relay towers, was anyone inclined to think about the old signal towers from ancient times... You know you had a huge fire at the top that was started, signaled the next tower and soforth until everyone knew there was danger?

My brain immediately thought of the Beacons of Gondor...
