Is this around Tompkins and Cunningham, for the Lindenwood Village/Town Center project? I read about that over the summer but not too many places are talking about the home buyouts at all.
According to county property records, this woman hasn't given in yet.
Do you know where the last few houses are? I'd like to see if they're pushing to get the entire area north of Spring Ave. cleared, because the redevelopment was originally supposed to launch this fall. |

Yeah that's it. Just drive back behind the old hardware stores and you'll see.
Also, fuck Lindenwood. |

| Yeah, just go anywhere near the intersection of First Capitol and Kingshighway and you'll see where the houses are. |

The last of it is coming down. I didn't have my camera with me but I figured I'd check em out anyway. Still couldn't get inside the old hardware stores...
Also stopped to check out the old Mr. Steak restaurant. I ate here once a long time ago. There was a sign on the door that said it was closed today due to an unforseen emergency. Peering through the windows, the tables are all set and everything is in its place and looks exactly the same as it always did inside.
According to Wikipedia, Mr. Steak died out in the mid 90's. But this location only closed within the past couple years. It was still in operation even after the new overpass was built right there, so this must've been one of the last one's, if not the last.

This is a tad OT, but...the St.Charles Mr. Steak was operating at least as late as 2008. Seeing the pix piqued my curiosity, so I did a Google Search and found a "Road Food" site with all sorts of interesting info. One of the posters mentioned eating there in 2008 (but then the thread petered out).
In 2004 he said he thought this was the last operating Mr. Steak in the country.
A friend opened a Mr. Steak in Ballwin back around '75; he only lasted a couple of years. The building is still there, just a tad West of New Ballwin on Manchester. I think it is now a Massa's.

Why didn't SubLunar tell me he was checking out those houses?
Also, it seems like longer ago than 2008 since Mr Steak's been open, but.. hmm. |

I got off work early yesterday and had to do some running around. I went to stc to pay a ticket and had to get back to the vet to pick up my cat before they closed. I figured I'd go check out the cooler ones real quick.
It's always a little spooky walking into a random house with stuff still in it.. I half expect to find some cripple wallowing in their own filth in the bedroom with a shotgun just waiting for me to turn the corner... |

| and no, Mr. Steak stayed open for quite a while after that overpass went up. 2009 sounds about right. I was always amazed that it managed to stay open as long as it did. |

| These homes were evacuated years ago due to asbestos... So i hope you guys didn't breathe in too much when you were inside... me and my friend were there, and a Lindenwood security guard stopped us, and told us he does not care if we go inside, but we should know that the homes still standing, contain legally too much Abestos to be torn town because it will harm the surrounding city... SCARY!! |

They can tear anything down .. it just costs a lot more.
And walking around asbestos wont hurt you unless its been broken up and its pieces/dust are in the air for you to breathe in. _________________

Not true. This may be the story they're telling you to keep you out, but Lindenwood actually harassed the residents to the point of having the city send them reminders to mow their lawns and threatening legal action for any infraction they could find. Real nit-picking asshole tactics. I know some of the people that lived in that area. The residents were not treated fairly at all.
Fuck Lindenwood. |
