For those out west....looks like the old public school in Gerald, MO is going to be torn down. It was built in 1910 and here's a picture from 1927.
If anyone does venture out take note of the fact that the building is in a fairly occupied area of town and the Gerald cops are both bored/anal.

How are they justifying the cost of demolition?
Is it an imminent danger to society?
Is someone dead-set on buying that specific parcel of land? And if so, Why? |

The building is in no danger to anyone and I strongly doubt there's a hidden buyer waiting in the wings. The society is simply going to donate the parcel to the city. As for demo costs, good question... |

As I suspected, once again we have a nice looking historic old building whose owners lack the foresight to justify letting it sit as is, giving it the chance to last long enough for an interested buyer to show up. By deciding to act on it in such a way, they seal its fate. And for why? What is the rush? Why can't people let a harmless, attractive old building continue to sit mothballed?
If you're not going to renovate it, just leave it alone!
This makes me want to drive to Gerald MO. |

My guess that people are doing this instead of sitting on the property is probably taxes. That's the only reason that half way makes since. As much as I like saving things, I know I couldn't aford to sit on vacant building and keep paying the property taxes on it. I don't know about that location, but I know here in Springfield, the property taxes were reassessed a year or so ago and some very crappy properties had a major hike in their taxes.

I already checked that on the county website and the assessor has the valuation listed as Exempt, most likely because a non-profit entity owns it.
So...taxes ain't the reason in this case. |

Most of the time no one cares enough to do any research. They don't realize how valuable historical properties are, and the value they can add to a community. All they want is money or their name recognized for a little while. If that means they sell out and tear something down, they don't give it any other thought. And that's just sad.

I'm having that battle with my dad right now over my grandparents farm house. This house was built in the 1880s in Kingfisher Co., Oklahoma, not too long after the land run. My great grandfather moved it out on to the farm from "town" back in the early 1920s, shortly after he bought the land when he moved form Kansas. There were two towns near the farm at that time. Sharidan was three miles away, Columbia was four. I want to keep the house because it's all that is left since both towns are non-existant today... Sheridan is nothing but a plowed filed, Columbia is only four blocks, all fenced off, and not a building left. My dad thinks the house isn't worth saving, but I'd like to and hopefully some day find out which town it was moved from.
