From this weeks RFT-" But, despite the demolition and piles of rubble that cover the site plenty of manholes are still visible and functioning. Allen says the entire underground infrastructure of the sight is still intact, meaning steam tunnels, sewers, electric wiring and all that stuff is still there"- Anyone checked this out? I've walked around in there but never really thought of going under, until now.......

I agree, there are probably defunct tunnels under that area. Sewer tunnels may or may not be vacant. There are possibly intact utility tunnels still. I've been wanting to check it out for some time.

I found an article at the Historical Society with a photo of a large vaulted brick sewer that was no longer in use as of the time of the article, IIRC. Furthermore, I'm pretty sure I remember it being in that area. I've meant to go back and double-check that ever since, I don't know why I didn't make a note of it at the time I came across it. Good story, eh?

I've been loosely following the Pruitt-Igoe redevelopment proposals for some months now, and I was mad that I missed Michael Allen's tour. I've always wanted to walk around the old lot there but without a guide I would just get bored of staring at trees.

Pruitt-Igoe has fascinated me for years. I really hope they do something nice with the land, and not just give it to a big-box retailer or leave it sitting around as a forest.

Here's the article, at any rate: http://blogs.riverfronttimes.com/dailyrft/2012/07/pruitt-igoe_michael_allen_paul_mckee.php

I am going there tomorrow to look around, that place is interesting even without going underground. I have to wonder if the guy who wrote that knows what hes talking about since manhole covers on the streets around there are stolen for scrap. I figure they must be secured or they'd be gone.....as for electrical wires...if there was any they won't be there for long after that article. The little Ameren building in the middle looks active, how they keep vandals away is a mystery to me. In Hubert Rother's book there is mention of a brewery cave near there .

I don't have Netflix, but I've been meaning to watch it for some time now. I should con one of my friends with Netflix to watch it with me, they'd probably fall asleep halfway through.

I don't think I would go there alone. It is definitely the kind of place one might stumble upon a dead body. pm me next time you are planning on going. I can usually only do stuff on Sundays.
