Is anyone here?
Is anyone here?
I was just wondering if anyone on UO actually lives in Kansas or goes there on a regular basis?

RE: Is anyone here?
I live in KCMO. That's not too far from Kansas. Not that I do a whole lot of running around abandoned places or anything, though.

Re: Is anyone here?
I realize this is a pretty old thread, but I live in Kansas. About halfway between Kansas City and Joplin.

If it wasn't for the fact that I have a good friend that lives in Kansas, I would never venture in there. I find the flatness disturbing.

dis-
prefix meaning 1. "lack of, not" (e.g. dishonest); 2. "do the opposite of" (e.g. disallow); 3. "apart, away" (e.g. discard)
Main Entry: tub·ing
Pronunciation: \ˈtü-biŋ, ˈtyü-\
Function: noun
Date: 1845
1: material in the form of a tube; also : a length or piece of tube
2: a series or system of tubes
3: the sport or activity of riding an inner tube (as down a river or snowy slope)
Evidently, Nicotti finds Kansas, due to the flatness, the opposite of material in the form of a tube. While this does make sense, after a fashion, it is somewhat surreal in the implication that he could find a location "tubing," or material in the form of a tube. Perhaps he confused a noun for an adjective, and what he really meant to say was that he finds Kansas to be distubular, or the opposite of tubular, in the sense of tubular borrowed from Valspeak meaning "ideal" (derived from tubular waves, ideal for riding).

Re: Is anyone here?
After that bit of edification...what flatness? Almost all the eastern third is rolling hills with prairies interspersed with woodlands. Not much different from the northwest third (if you sliced the map into caddy-cornered thirds from northeast to southwest) of Missouri. The far southeastern portion of Kansas is actually geographically in the Ozarks. You have some flatlands directly west of the state line opposite Joplin, 'til you get about to Coffeyville. Then again it is no flatter than the lands east of Pittsburg in Missouri, until you reach Lamar or so. Once you get to Coffeyville, there is the region known as the Flint Hills in Kansas and the Cross Timbers in Oklahoma and Texas. Very hilly and woody in spots. Nicknamed, "the Kansas Ozarks" by people from Wichita who don't want to make the journey all the way to the real mountains. Ever been to Cabela's in KC? Did you note the natural beauty of the countryside even that close or in an urban environment? Hills son, hills. lol
