Abandoned Dog Track

Post by Sertile »

Hey, I know no one really reads this forum, but I've been in Kansas for the last couple months (coming home in a month), and I've been doing some exploring in my free time. The other day I passed by an abandoned dog racing track outside of Pittsburg, and I decided to stop and take some pictures. The place was pretty cool, and not very old. I wouldn't call it "all the way" abandoned, but it's clearly been in dissuse for some time. There were a couple of truckers sleeping in the parking lot, but neither seemed to care that I was poking around. One of the locals told me they use the place for student drivers now (the parking lot, not the track!). I'll probably blog about it later, but for now here are some pictures:

Yay, thumbnails!

It's nice to know someone actually reads these boards, even if it is just two people (one of which reads everything). It'd be nice if we had more tips coming out of Kansas. I'll post anything else I run into while I'm here.

Sorry it took me so long but there is some stuff around were you are at. I worked on a big mine settelment project in fort scott kansas about 3 years ago. We were sealing up a old underground coal mine that the new highway went over just east of town. anyways down around pittsburg there are still some big abandoned mining equipment and 1-2 coal proccesing plants. I was only on that project for a week or so but a good frined of mine was there for a long time and did a lot of exploring. I will pass on any info I can find. I was thinking there was a big abandoned mill west of the fort and then a big one south of town pass the walmart, I think. Sorry it has been a long time. Oh the fort is cool too!

Thanks for the tips, but it was pretty much too late for me to act on any of them by the time you posted. I just wanted to say that I put up a blog entry about this place, which goes a little more in-depth. Unfortunately I had to use some of the same pictures, since I already posted my best ones :)

Not really. There's a pretty big mill like the ones in Springfield up in Ft. Scott (north of Pittsburg), but that's about it.

On a cold, clear, dark night, you can hear the distant howlings of greyhounds off in the distance.

You're lucky you didn't get zapped by the po-leece. I don't live far from there and we go by there quite a bit. There's always talk of using that place for something else, in the news. I'm extremely surprised you could just walk in and get the pics. Guess it pays to be bold. But back to the cops, they love to sit there in that parking lot and bs with the highway patrol, etc. Lots of times there will be two or three of them. Bein's the place is not very old and was backed by rich business interests I think the cops watch it pretty close.

Passing by there this weekend, there is a big fence up with Key Construction signs all around. Looks like they are re-working the outside of the building. I do know Phil Ruffin owns the building. Last year he wanted to put slots in that building, but I think that fell through. One of his other dog tracks, Wichita Greyhound Park, also sits empty.

Your right that the slot machines didnt pan out.

I bumped this thread back to the top, because if you are thinking of getting into this place you may want to do so soon. This place was in the local news today. They are thinking of doing some remodel. A few different ideas with casino type ideas are floating around. Who knows if any of them will pan out again.
