Above I noted that I revisited the Heavener Runestone and the Heavener Mine site on October 2, 2006. That is a typo. It was October 2, 2007.

I am noted in many books as W.W. McCormicki of Abilene, TX. Those authors have quoted an author who misquoted the first author who quoted from my grandfather's statement. I took dictation on that statement and still have the original statement with his signature on it. His statement is much more extensive than what they quote in those books.

W.A. McCormick
Grandson of Atlas Almon Mathis.

Jeez. I don't mind that that guy was skeptical that I actually talked to Atlas' grandson, but I would've appreciated it if he had actually asked me about it before he assumed I was lying. Because I wasn't. I talked to him many times and he sent me all kinds of documents in the mail. And that's really him that's posting here as well.

I remember reading about this years ago...I never made the Heavener Rune Stone/Mine Connection though...interesting.
What was/were the blocks suppose to be???
Were they blocking off another section of the mine???
If it was the vikings...or anyone else for that matter...how on earth did they mine/dig so deep with the limited technology that had back then???
Very interesting little mystery.
In the book.."Oklahoma Treasure Tales", by Steve Wilson...he does have a section on the Heavener Rune Stone...I don't think it mentions the mine though...I'll look and see and post any other Info I can find asap.

Ok...found my Oklahoma Treasure Tales book!!!... :D :D
According to the book...were supposidly found by the Choctaw Indians in the 1830's. The Runes were probably not know to "White Man" until about 1898 when Luther Capps of Heavener chanced upon them.
The Rock is supposidly a vertical slab of stone 12-feet high, 10-feet wide and 18-inches thick. It lies halfway up the west side fo Poteau Mountain, less than 2-miles northeast of Heavener, in Le Flore County. Five feet above the surface, facing west, eight runic characters stretch more than five feet across the face fo the stone.

There were at least 3 more rune stones found in the area many years late.
They were supose to have been translated to read:

Heavener Runestone: Nov. 11, 1012
Poteau Runestone: Nov. 11, 1017
Tulsa Runestone: Dec. 22, 1022
Shawnee Runestone: Nov. 24, 1024
