The satellite pictures of the old Sunflower Ammunition Plant have got me drooling. The plant is immediately south of highway 10, between Eudora and Desoto. The site is no longer an active plant, but it is not totally abandoned. Apparently, the feds or a contractor is at the site for an environmental cleanup. It is a huge site; the attached pic is only about 1/4 of the entire plant. According to: http://www.sfaap.net/ "The majority of the industrial infrastructure remains at the site." Yikes!

I have seen the four water towers many times from highway 10 on the way to Lawrence. I always wondered if there was anything else to see, and the answer is a big fat yes!

You would really have to have a set of nuts to go in there. I would be cool but I dont know if its worth the risk.

definitely risky and maybe impossible; but after looking at the close-in satellite pics, i noticed two things: there are no cars within the plant, so maybe it is empty at least part of the time; and there are several dirt road entrances far away from the main entrance...

Those places usually are massive. They have testing facilities as well as bunkers. I dunno much about them, or what they have bunkers for (some one's fuckup?), but minus getting hung to dry by authorities, it would be a cool place to visit. There's supposibly an abandoned one in Camden, but I dunno how much of it even remains. I kinda forgot to check it out while I was there (got A.D.D.) but I've been told there still are at least bunkers there.
After the whole 9/11 incident, you really have to watch yer ass. It's way too easy to be mistaken and end up in some really deep shit.

Looks huge. Not to sound like a broken record, but I'd be a little wary of going there, too. Very cool, though.

That attached picture is hardly 1/4th. In fact, you're lucky if that is 1/8th.

the plant is so huge and spread out that i think that it might be possible to see interesting things without running into anybody else;

Before anyone even considers going in here they should read this: http://www.sfaap.net/Hazardous%20substance%20storage%20activities.pdf

Unless you are a hasmat expert with full gear, stay the hell out of it.

isn't pentachlorophenal supposed to be good for you?

personally, i have not been concerned about chemicals at any site where i have been; i am not eating or drinking anything there, and if the air smells clean, i'll go ahead; if i had a job at the sunflower plant or if i lived next to it, i would be much more concerned; but i'm only passing through and i'm gone in a minute;

the chemicals at the sunflower plant are in the ground; there has been 20 years of rainfall to wash them away; (then they get into the water, so the neighbors are all drinking them now); exposure would be nonexistent to someone walking through only once;

the sunflower environmental reports were prepared because there have been proposals to build something there (remember "the land of oz"?); construction would stir up the pollution in the ground; but again, that does not pertain to somebody just walking through the site now;

maybe someday i will end up with a cool yellow glow like gothstone's picture

Very good point peterbillionair. Though the report actually says what buildings are being cleaned. Waste doesn't leave buildings unless it's cleaned. With over 1,000 buildings, it's hard to say what's safe and what's not.

I think the place is still really active though.

I don't know much about those chemicals, but why not wear an N95 or HEPA respirator? Those things are pretty good about filtering out particles, and can be carried in a cargo pocket.
