Mt. Washington cemetery
Mt. Washington cemetery
Has anyone in here been to Mt. Washington cemetery? I had heard a rumor that there is a mystery staircase somewhere within and that it leads to an old ride from the amusement park that was there about a hundred years ago. Knowing how rumors and urban legends go i did a little reasearch and found that before 1900 there was an old amusement park and botanical garden there. Please let me know if you know anything. It is located in Independence MO

I've heard the same rumor. Although, in the version I heard, it was a trolley tunnel below the cemetery that led up to the surface via a spiral staircase.
And here's a little more fuel to the fire. Right at the border of Mt. Washington Cemetery, there are some old limestone mines. I've walked outside the entrance of them, and they look pretty extensive, although I don't know if they actually go under the cemetery. It's been on my list of things to check out forever. I just didn't have time last time I was in KC.

You have me drooling about the limestone mines. Easy to find? Are they in use?

When are you comming back to KC WR? We need to plan a better date. I'm a hell of a lot more flexible in the summer; maybe all you Springfield people could come up too. We could make a really long UE day out of it. Hit maybe 5 or 6 sites? ...Extreme UE

Easy to find, not in use. Parking is the only problem, because you might have to park a ways off.Anne wrote:You have me drooling about the limestone mines. Easy to find? Are they in use?
Well, except for David Keetz's trip, it might be another month or so hopefully.S1L3N7B0B wrote:When are you comming back to KC WR?

Are we talking about the same caves? The ones I'm talking about are right beside 435 before the turnoff to the cemetery. There aren't any locks that take codes as far as I saw. Unless you're talking about plain ol' combination locks (although I don't remember seeing any of those either). There's just some chain link fences in front of the entrances that you'd have to climb over.ze_beeved wrote:I just talked to a guy I work with that used to be security for those abandoned caves. Here's a couple of the entrances to the ones I'm talking about:
