A question for anyone who has explored the ammo plant....

Post by Chris »

Ok, I know some of you have been to the old WWII ammo plant on Goodfellow at I-70. I was told last night that the plant has or had tunnels that went all the way to the river? Did you see any tunnel openings? Plates in the floor, garage doors, etc? They may not have been in the main building.

The people I talked to were older and don't make stuff up, so unless they're just plain mistaken I bet those are still there. They'd have to be pretty long...about 2 3/4 miles.

BTW, do a google for "St. Louis Army Ammunition Plant" and it comes up with articles stating that the plant is probably to be razed...to build a Home Depot. Oh joy.

No, I've never been there. I don't know that these tunnels exist, but I've been told by reliable sources that they did and I would guess that if they did at one time, they're still there now.

I don't see anything that looks like a dock or loading station or anything on or near the river that the tunnel would lead to, but there is a large outlet of some kind of underground tunnel, but it looks like a storm sewer outlet as there's water in it.

It's large because it's much wider than a barge. Here's a Google Earth photo.

Whatever this thing is, I'd like to check it out.

I've seen that place on google earth before, but I don't think it could be the same tunnels. If they do still exsist, the entrance by the river could be either closed down or at least camoflaged in some way, or else everyone would know about it. I really want to see that munitions plant, it's just so in the open I've been afraid to do it yet.

Yeah, I don't think it has anything to do with it. But it is the only opening near the plant...and it's almost 3 miles away.

I would like to see that thing though. The bike trail runs right past it.

I'm going to see these old guys again on Friday. Maybe they can elaborate a little. I wouldn't see why they would build tunnels to the river anyway. Maybe to the railroad tracks near the bank, but not the river itself.

No, I couldn't find anything. Maybe we should make it a point to check this place out looking anything that looks like a tunnel entrance.

How is the air in the ammo plant? I heard it was pretty bad in there, people getting sick and stuff like that.

It's a pretty huge place, I can't imagine it could be all that bad, beings it's so open.
