RE: What do you do to protect your self in Scary Area's?
I think i must have, and didnt realize it. Each time i have apologized i get the same response, so i must have. I wish we could move past this, but she's headstrong i'll give her that--which is a good trait when you are in the right, so i'm must be in the wrong, and all i can do is apologize and hope the beating ends.

Maybe she doesn't like wimpy men, she is married to a cop after all. Maybe you should stop apologizing and tell her to, "stick it where the sun don't shine, cause you don't care if you're friends with some random chick on the internet or not!"
And I did see Kit's boobs... at the last sushi night... sadly they were covered by her shirt. But they were still very nice.

If he's not careful i'll mow him down. I've even thought about going by his company for breakfast.

No weapons per say, just a small folding knife, a Maglite, pepper spray and at least one other person. I've found so far that diplomacy has been the best approach with the homeless residents of some locations...a smile, introduction and handshake goes a long way, and when that doesn't work, bribery does.
I've only been caught by the police one time, and it was exploring an old mine around Ullin, Illinois. It was two state cops and a county mounty; they called the location's owner and he didn't care that we were there since we were just taking pictures, and he even gave us his e-mail address to contact him if we wanted to go back. Even the cops didn't really care, just said it was a safety issue, and told us a way to go back in and not get caught. Then they sat around and b.s.'d with us for like half an hour about the location, its history, etc.

Good advice on diplomacy. I personally have had no issues with the homeless, but i usually just leave if i see them in an area i'm at.

Ha I'm just the opposite...I feel better about being in a place AFTER the person(s) who lives there (if there are any) and I have had some brief face time, if for no other reason than so I don't scare them by being there and they get defensive. The way I see it, these places are peoples' homes too, and I wouldn't like it if people just came barging in my house without asking first.
If any of you are familiar with the Dignity Harbor homeless camp that was recently demolished, I was very good friends with many of its residents and did a 3-month documentary on them for the St. Louis Beacon. I feel this time with the homeless has prepared me to diplomat my way out of any possibly hairy situations. In fact, when I was at Powell Square and was stopped by a resident, the instant I said I was friends with Dignity Harbor, he smiled and reassured me that we would be safe on our adventure in the building.

In disregard to East St. Louis and KC, I normally just carry a machete on my belt. It's made some high schoolers on air duster back off while EU.
