Picher, OK Points of Interest
Picher, OK Points of Interest
Anyone going to Picher anytime soon? I was looking through a mapping software I have, and found some points of interest(POI) that I forgot I had. I am a geocacher and have found geocaches that are/were in Picher. With a few of them, the hider added some extra POI's to some of the geocache page. Some of them are interesting.
I was interested in knowing if anyone had been to these places? Below is part of the cache page that listed them. Some aren't in Picher, but you may be interested. One of these days, I'm going back up there to look for them. The geocaches were placed in 2009, so I don't know if some of these are still around.
There were other points of interest that did not make good places to place a cache, but are worthy of seeing in this area. Here is that list for anyone who is interested.
1. Tribal Flags (Make sure you pluck and stomp some of the bagworms from the bushes as you pass) N36º 52.570 W094º 50.781
2. Mushroom Factory (Mushroom facilities in Canada must be 5 miles from residents. “Smell the ambiance”–Earl H.) N36º 54.817 W094º 50.539
3. Mineshaft ((look to the East in the stand of trees) Many of these mine shafts remain in the area uncovered and unmarked!) N36º 56.781 W094º 49.838
4. Industry (This is a company that is selling chat for gravel or sand (with regulations due to its toxicity) “Chat, coming to your road soon” –Earl Hatley) N36º 57.486 W094º 50.922
5. Fraidy Hole (Looking at the base of the chat pile to the East you can see a tornado shelter that survived.) N36º 58.608 W094º 49.983
6. Miner’s Park (Closed in 2006 because of risk of subsidence.) N36º 59.000 W094º 49.981
7. Hoppy Ray’s (Hoppy Ray and his son run a private museum and billiards parlor. “CNN’s last man standing”) N36º 59.051 W094º 49.853
8. Billboard (Elementary student’s message to help children prevent their own lead poisoning.) N36º 59.137 W094º 49.855

10. Picher Schools (No school here, notice the rock wall built around the football field. These mining rocks are loaded with heavy metals, just notice the orange streaks on the wall as you drive around it.) N36º 59.166 W094º 50.451
11. Rascal Flats (Joe Don Rooney of Rascal Flats is from Picher, OK. The flat land to the West shares the name.) N36º 58.058 W094º 49.857

Rascal Flats should be wiped off the face of the earth with much fire and blood.

Gah! That blue font is hard to read!
Otherwise awesome!

More online investigation than onsite exploration these days.

This whole area is like Hell on Earth. I can't wait to go check it out!
Re: Picher, OK Points of Interest
Come with me! I'm trying to figure out just how harmful it is to walk on the chat piles once. It doesn't seem like it'd be that bad as long as you wash afterward but I'm seeing some sites reference it as the most toxic place in the US.
Re: Picher, OK Points of Interest
Damn. I'm down dude. My issue is getting out there. Let me know atleas a week in advanced and we will make it happen.

Sounds pretty bad for our health. Maybe disposable clothing and air filter masks. I seen a video on how to make your own cheap masks with charcoal I will find it.

RE: Picher, OK Points of Interest
Went to Pitcher in 2013, but just drove around. Touched the chat piles and lived to tell about it. Worth your time to check it out especially since you have some points of interest. There were no police that we saw and only a couple of cars that we passed in the 2 hours that we were there.
Re: Picher, OK Points of Interest
I was there once, too, and I loved it. there are quite interesting places where you can spend an hour and then here are also cafes with very tasty food. I liked the food there as it was very tasty
