Abandoned Gas Stations on Highway 70

Post by kokonutfreaks »

This past week, I went on a small road trip with one of my really good friends, traveling from St. Louis going west on Highway 70 to Saint Joseph, Missouri. On the way there, we found several abandoned gas stations off the exits. Here are a few photos of some we found along the way. I hope you guys enjoy!

The first one we found was at the Williamsburg, MO exit.

Image

- This one hasn't been abandoned very long, although the vandals made it to this one. Very unique gas station with two floors, very sketchy going up though. If you're ever in the area, make sure to make a quick stop. Another plus is, traffic is very low and you shouldn't have a problem.

Image

- As you can defiantly see in this picture, it's all pretty modern. The whole time I was in there, I was wondering what happened to the place and why it was abandoned.

Image

- Here's a shot of the upstairs.

Image

- Here's another shot where the restrooms were.

The second one we found was at the Kingdom City, MO exit.

Image

- This one has sure seen better days, vandals destroyed this place. Although, this station is my most favorite of them all. It's also one of the bigger gas stations I've explored, it's huge. Very secluded area, shouldn't have a single problem if you wanted to stop for some photos.

Image

- Not only was this place a larger gas station, it also once had a restaurant inside!

Image

- You can see the stoves, deep freezers and such behind the bar.

The third one we found was at the Rocheport, MO exit.

Image

- This one had that classic gas station look to it. I'm thinking it might of been a Casey's General Store/Gas Station or a Sinclair in it's day, but I'm not sure. This location was in the middle of no-where, which was probably why it was abandoned. You shouldn't have a single person bother you while exploring it.

Image

Image

- Here are two shots of the interior of the gas station. It was a pretty small and compact little place. It also still had the old Coca-Cola cooler, Nestle Ice Cream freezer, as well as both pumps that belonged outside.

The fourth one we found was at mile marker 74/exit on Interstate 70. This station was in the middle of no-where, the closest town is Sweet Springs, MO. Since this place is hard to explain where it is, here are the coordinates.

38.970472, -93.266339

Image

- As you can see, the main building isn't standing anymore, and by looking at the piles of debris, it looks like it was burned.

Image

- At the far end of the parking lot, there's an abandoned car garage full of graffiti which I believe had 3 bays.

Image

- There are also 5 abandoned mobile homes behind the car garage. Everything was left behind, highly recommend checking them out! At this place, be careful of where you park your car, its right off the highway and it's very easy for someone to see you.

And the last one we found, which was the fifth one, was at the Windsor Place, MO exit.

Image

- There is only one way into to this gas station, and that's by climbing through a window. My friend was able to get in and get some video footage. He told me that there was still Gatorade, and various types of sodas still in the coolers.

Image

- Be very careful parking at this one. Me and my friend actually had the cops called on us and sure enough, a police car rolled into the parking lot. It was one of the most nicest, respectful police officer I've ever spoke to before. I told her I was just taking some pictures and she said, "Oh go ahead, I'm not telling you to leave. I just wanted to see what you two were up too, we've had some pretty bad vandalism here." She just asked us where we were from and overall was a very nice officer. Just be careful at this place!

Hope you guys enjoyed these photos. Thanks for viewing.

Awesome, thanks for sharing. As a chick, I see things like this and will sometimes take pictures around the outside but can never talk myself into going in. I have like this fear of ... idk, the unknown? Like, I am afraid I'm going to startle a wild animal which will attack me. Or gigantic spiders will jump on my face from holes in the ceiling. It's really weird because I don't freak out about walking through the woods and think about snakes or animals there. I would love to figure out how to get over this so I can capture pics of the inside like you did here. How often do you guys surprise animals or have spiders eat your face off? Tell me I'm being irrational here.

Actually to be honest with you, I've never seen a spider, or ever came across any animal while exploring, nor a person.

My friends and I explored the one in Windsor Place a couple years ago while on an Urbex road trip! It's always been one of my most memorable explores, but I could never for the life of me remember where it was specifically. The store looked like its owners up and left on a moments notice. Everything was left as-is; Coke bottles that were now orange, units of drinks in the back room, lottery tickets, store records, you name it.

That was the first and only time I've gone number two in an abandoned building, too. Very cool place. Funnily enough though, we parked our car in the back parking area wirhout any problem. There was even a sheriff that drove by the area but apparently didn't see us.

Did you see any political sign anywhere in the place? My friend jokingly put up one in the blinds you climb through to get in. Curious to see if it's still there.

There actually was a sign sitting on a chair by the window you climb in at, was that it?

The unknown is fun :D

In my experience, the only animals you really have to worry about in the midwest are bears, snakes, and guard dogs. I've never run into a bear, snakes are easily avoided if encountered (unless you wanna wrassle 'em), and guard dogs usually let you know well in advance if they're around.

I used to stop at the Williamsburg station all the time in the 90's when traveling back and forth from STL to Columbia. It was a little run down and, despite the easy access from the highway, not very busy. I liked it because it was so fast to get off and back onto 70. Interesting to see it in disrepair as I remember all the shelves and coolers being packed back then.

Yeah it is. Do you happen to know when it was abandoned? By the looks from inside, I'd say it's been abandoned for around 20 to 30 years.
