Ever hear of the abandoned girl scout camp on the shores of Lake Springfield called Camp Winoka that was permanently closed after several girl scouts were brutally murdered? Unfortunately, such a place has never existed. It does make a nice story, though, doesn't it? The reality is Winoka Lodge, a hunting lodge founded around 1890 on the James River. There were springs all over the property, including one considered to be the biggest in the county. A fire destroyed the main building in the seventies, and the remains of the once prominent lodge are still there buried in the undergrowth.
